The long awaited Apple tablet computer has been revealed to the public at last. It’s called the “iPad” and has had a fairly mixed reception so far. It’s great in many ways and the e-book reader’s most underrated attribute must arguably be the quality of the display. The screen is such a boon to those of us who are struggling with old sightedness. For the first time in a long time, a great number of senior folks are reading more, faster and longer. E-book readers suddenly became all the rage during 2009. The launch of Amazon’s Kindle 2.0 and Kindle DX readers created a good deal of publicity for these devices. Other manufacturers responded with their own readers – Sony with its Daily Edition and Barnes and Noble with the Nook reader. Other companies – such as Microsoft and Apple – made it known that they had devices of their own in development and scheduled for release in the near future. The Amazon Kindle DX is the newer version of their popular Kindle that came out earlier. This new model has some very nice modifications that set it apart from its predecessor. The DX has a screen that is noticeably larger, and this one feature alone is a very welcome improvement. Anyone who used one of the original AmazonKindles is going to immediately appreciate the difference. 2009 was a good year for ebook readers in general – and a very good year for the Amazon Kindle reader in particular. Although ebook readers have been around for a decade or so – the Franklin eBookman is generally agreed to have been the first and was released in 1999 – they only really took off in a big way during 2009. When Amazon’s large format Kindle DX e-book reader was released in June 2009, it certainly made waves in the academic publishing community. The first Kindle, which was released in November 2007, and the upgraded Kindle 2, which hit the streets in February of 2009, had both generated some interest – but not anything like the high level of excitement which the DX seemed to produce. The world of academic publishing is perhaps not the first thing that many people would think of when considering new and innovative technology. So it may be somewhat surprising to learn that it is exactly this very arena which is driving huge changes in the way that we read books. E-book readers have been around for a decade now. The Franklin Ebookman launched in’99 – and it’s still selling today. However, it’s only in the last six months or so that these devices have really come into mainstream public awareness. Without a doubt, the Amazon Kindle reader family are the frontrunners right now. When you think about it, e-book readers, and the e-books that are read on them, are the ideal product for Amazon. So it’s no wonder that they released not one but two new readers in the first 6 months of 2009. There are an incredible number of manufacturers currently fighting it out in the new, but ever expanding, e-book reader market. The high level of competition is a strong indication that rapid growth is anticipated in this sector. And this will be good news for consumers as manufacturers strive to enhance specifications and offer lower prices. |
