So Dark the Night: Renowned Parisian investigator is set to work throughout his holy day in the French country side. An impressively made B film, something of a sleeper in its time, agonizes only for absence of appeal on the part of its (mainly obscure) cast. Sexy Beast: A retired British gangster, living the life in Spain, is visited by a fierce gangster who desires him to work one more heist. Trendy, aggressive, current day gangster’s film has excellent acting containing a special performance by Kingsley as the malicious perpetrator. Cast includes Ray Winstune, Ben Kingsley, Ian McShane, Cavan Kendall, Julianne White, Alvaro Monje, and James Fox. (88 minutes, 2001)
Little Shop of Horrors: Extremely amusing black comedy musical in reference to a nebbish (played to excellence by Moranis) whose “abnormal” new plant brings him excellent fortune-however turns into a Frankentein. Greene (replicating her level role) is a pleasure as his squeaky voiced heartthrob, Martin humorous as her macho boyfriend. Cast includes Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Vincent Gardenia, Steve Martin, James Belushi, John Candy, Christopher Visitor, Bill Murray, and the voice of Levi Stubbs. (88 minutes, 1986)
Deep Red: There’s style to burn in pointless terror thriller with Hemmings on the trail of a sadistic psycho murderer. Showy, weird scenes set to beating rock soundtrack. Cast includes David Hemmings, Daria Nicolodi, Gabriele Lavia, Macha Meril, and Glauco Mauri. (98 minutes, 1975)
Lust for Life: This is a bright adaptation of Irving Rock’s biography of painter Van Gogh, vividly depicting his anguished life. Quinn captured a well-warranted ‘Oscar for his performance as painter-Guy Gauguin, in this attractive color production. Cast includes Kirk Douglas, Anthony Quinn, James Donald, Pamela Brown, Everett Sloane, Niall MacGinnis, Noel Purcell, Henry Daniell, Jill Bennett, Lionel Jeffries, and Eric Pohlmann. Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing & Charm School: While a current widower assists a dying mishap sufferer it sets in motion a journey to find the poor man’s long lost love at a school reunion. This leads to a ballroom dance school and a dull, hokey, excessively sentimentalized tale. Cast includes Robert Carlyle, Marisa Tomei, Sean Astin, John Goodman, Mary Steenburgen, Donnie Walhberg, David Paymer, Camryn Manheim, Adam Arkin, Sonia Braga, and Elden Henson. (103 minutes, 2006)
