Trucking Insurance and Hazardous Materials

by Steve Turner

Trucking Insurance coverage is a requirement for all commercial truck drivers in the United States of America. Many of these truck drivers will be carrying hazardous materials and therefore need to be very informed about the regulations associate with this circumstances.

Truck drivers should be always thinking of safety as they are driving, particularly if they are carrying hazardous materials. Strict adherence to the federal and state regulations in this area is mandatory. If drivers fail to do so they will find themselves receiving fines, penalties, or even by being barred from working in the transport industry.

One type of hazardous material that is of particular concern include those that are radioactive. Commercial truck drivers need to comprehend their particular risks and liabilities in association with carrying radioactive loads.

Any radioactive materials that are being transported must be clearly marked as hazardous on the trailer that carries them. Radioactive materials are very sensitive and can even cause safety issues for others just being near the cargo. Catastrophic financial consequences and even the loss of lives results from accidents that involve a truck carrying radioactive materials.

The truck driver is responsible to make sure that the route through which they travel will reduce the radiological risk its travel will place on other residents. When making decisions on the route to be taken drivers should consider factors such as population density, accident and traffic history.

Each state has designated routes of travel for hazardous materials from which drivers will use to compile their travel plans. They are only allowed to deviate from these routes in specific situations such as fuel or repair stops, picking up or offloading materials, or for emergency situations.

If a situation does arise where the driver does need to leave these specific routes then drivers need to closely document the reasons. They need to always keep notes of route followed, planned stops, departure and arrival times and emergency telephone numbers.
