Bring Out Your Gift For Marketing

by Lydia Hurlbut

Why do we hear the word marketing and it is such a turn off? It is instantly associated with selling which you want to avoid like the plague. Would you look forward to marketing if it was about creating meaningful relationships that allow you to be of service to others?

First, become aware of your unconscious thoughts by writing down the answer to the following statement, “Marketing is …” Perhaps you associate it with a past experience such as a pushy person at the mall trying to sell you their cuticle buffer. Or maybe you resist learning new ways to promote your business because you dislike self-promotion. Do you prefer to fly solo and dislike being in partnership with others? It is critical to write down your present thoughts and feelings about marketing to create awareness in order to shift your future thinking.

It is possible to enjoy reaching out and have fun attracting new clients if you do it in a way that you enjoy. Get rid of the words “I should” and be willing to create or try existing methods without resistance. Marketing is going out into the world and telling others how you can help them in an authentic, ethical manner.

To illustrate the point, we will talk about Sue who is a graphic designer. She knows the value of a good logo and realizes it is a critical service she provides her clients. If Sue does her job well, the logo generates an immediate impression and gives an initial understanding about the business.

Taking it one step further, Sue is not only good at logo design but has a gift for translating big dreams and vague ideas into concrete images. She does this by careful listening, spending time with clients to get to know them and listening to her intuition about what is important to them. Sue then creates a logo that uniquely represents their company.

What if Sue became an expert in logo redesign? Positioning yourself as an expert by defining your unique gifts and paying attention to what you enjoy doing more than anything is crucial. It allows you to eliminate the competition and find a unique position in the marketplace. Then let your creative juices flow in terms of outreach!

How could Sue gain more customers?

1. Give a free workshop on business card redesign one time per month. That would be a way to attract new clients, get to know people in her local community for future referrals and continue to position herself as an expert.

2. Write a paper on how a good logo benefits a business for her website or the local newspaper.

3. Offer a teleclass or workshop about how to design a good logo.

4. Offer to speak at a number of local businesses or the chamber of commerce about the benefits of a superior logo.

5. Redesign her website and offer a promotion reflecting her expertise such as 30% off for logo redesign for the next 60 days.

Outreach and marketing can be fun if you find at least 5 strategies that match your personality, that are fun and will allow you to reach many people. Those people will grow and change for the better by getting to know you and your unique gifts. You will be doing what you love and have the chance to share your talent with others. They need to know you exist before they can reach out and ask for your service. Make it easy and become inspired to create new ways to let your voice be heard!
